[edit] Sample C&D Workshops and Descriptions for Past Years

THINKING ABOUT ARCHITECTURE – What is architecture? Is it a building? Is it fine art? Where do ideas for buildings come from? Why do you love some buildings and hate others? How does the process of making architecture work? These fundamental questions will be addressed and illustrated with slides in a seminar format. You’ll never look at buildings the same again!

THE GETZ’S FAMILY LAUGHING FARM AND CHEESE MAKING OPERATION – Would you like to see how an organic farm works? Meet the cows and the new calves? Come see how the Getz family makes its own specially crafted cheese, and stores it in a cave.

THE BALINESE PEOPLE: THEIR CULTURE AND RELIGION – We will present slides and a video from her recent trip to Bali, Indonesia. Discussion will follow regarding Balinese culture, a village upbringing, Balinese Hinduism and its role in everyday life, magic and witchcraft, and dance and drama. The Indonesian women’s national dress will also be presented.

STAINED GLASS CANDLE HOLDERS – Using scraps of stained glass we will be creating colorful mosaic votive candleholders by gluing bits of glass in a pattern of your own design on plain glass votives. Grout will be provided so that you can grout your candleholder if you chose to in a week or so, once the glue cures. Samples will be provided.

THE “WAR ON TERRORISM”-A DIFFERENT VIEW – Why is the US military in Central Asia? Was war the only choice? Is there more to this picture than meets the eye? How does it all affect me? Viewpoints not heard on CNN or CBS will be presented regarding the current war and the history preceding it. Afterwards, the floor will be open for questions and discussion. Students of all opinions are encouraged to sign up.

ART INSPIRED BY ANDY GOLDSWORTHY – Andy Goldsworthy is a creative nature artist whose work you might have seen in books titled Wood, Stone, and Earth. He is famous for creating amazing designs of shapes and colors using stones and leaves, sticks, snow, sand, etc. We will start by looking through Goldsworthy’s books and noticing his techniques. Then, we’ll go outside to design and create 1 or 2 art pieces. Finally, we will use the digital camera to capture and share our art. Bring warm clothes and your imagination.

THE CREATIVE PHOTOGRAPHIC PORTRAIT – Participants will hear a brief lecture on the subject followed by instruction and experimentation. Participants will have the opportunity to practice making creative portraits both inside and outside. This workshop will utilize the Gailer darkroom. ******Participants must bring a 35 mm camera! *******

OWL PELLET ECOLOGY – In the investigation, we will learn about owl pellets and how they are formed. We will have the chance to view a short video on the subject and then dissect large barn owl pellets. We will record our results and compare them to results from a study in Washington State. Finally, we will display our finds and conclude with a field trip to visit actual local producers of owl pellets.

THE HUMAN FIGURE: GESTURE DRAWING – Students will participate in figure drawing exercises, beginning with quick gestures and working up to 5 and 10 minute poses. We will work with live models and a rotate among students as subjects.

ACCORDION BOOK MAKING – Use mat board; fabric, Modge Podge; glue; and collage materials to create a work of book art. Through creativity and resourcefulness, we will produce artistic books.
